The Toronto office of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP is seeking a Legal Assistant in the Commercial Litigation Group to assist the practice of three lawyers and a law clerk in a 14-month contract role. One lawyer is a Partner who is a member of the Securities Litigation Focus Group whose practice is in the area of securities litigation and regulatory proceedings including broker liability matters, oppression remedies, as well as directors’ and officers’ liability. The other two lawyers are both Associates, one with a general commercial litigation practice with a focus on securities litigation and regulation matters, as well as criminal and quasi-criminal prosecutions. The other Associate practices in the areas of commercial and securities litigation and public law. The Law Clerk focuses on commercial litigation and enforcement.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- Legal Assistant diploma
- Minimum 3+ years of Commercial Litigation legal experience
- Solid knowledge of litigation practices and procedures
- Experienced in the preparation of Factums, Motion Records
- Solid knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure
- Proficiency in MS Office
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Transcribe and type legal documents
- Organize and expedite flow of work
- Route or answer correspondence
- Drafting basic correspondence
- Initiate follow-up as required
- Organize and maintain client files
- Communicate with clients
- Schedule meetings
- Perform clerical, administrative and general office duties
- Perform administrative duties with respect to accounting, opening and closing files, docketing, billing, etc.
- Other duties as assigned
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to communicate in a professional manner with clients and lawyers
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Detail-oriented individual with good proofreading skills
- Excellent multi-tasking skills
- Ability to work independently, follow instructions with minimal supervision and take initiative
- Able to set own priorities while maintaining flexibility
- A team player with excellent interpersonal skills
- Availability to work overtime, when necessary
