Background

Robyn Grant is a Partner at our Toronto office. She graduated from the University of Windsor Law School in 1998, was a summer and articling student at Borden & Elliot and was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 2000. Prior to law school, Robyn completed an Honours Bachelor of Arts at Queen's University and was awarded the gold medal in the department of Classical Studies.

Professional Experience

  • Represents healthcare institutions and their staff in the defence of medical malpractice and personal injury claims including healthcare class actions. Robyn attends to all aspects of the management of a case (ie. pleadings, investigations, examinations for discoveries, motions, mediations, pre-trials and trials).
  • Acts as general counsel to hospitals on various day-to-day issues including risk management and patient safety, crisis management, disclosure and statutory compliance including interpretation and application of various statutes such as the Public Hospitals Act, Health Care Consent Act, Mental Health Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act, Quality of Care Information Protection Act.
  • Provides advice to hospitals on corporate matters such as the revision of administrative and professional staff by-laws, the interpretation of specific by-law clauses, and the revision and implementation of policies.
  • Provides advice to hospitals on professional staff credentialing and the management of professional staff privileges issues.
  • Represents regulated health care providers such as nurses and dentists before their governing administrative bodies (ie. College of Nurses, Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario) in the course of responding to complaints made against them, and in the review of complaints decisions before the Health Professions Appeal and Review Board.
  • Represents hospital staff and physicians before the Consent and Capacity Board, for example in relation to findings of incapacity to consent to treatment.
  • Provides advice on the management of investigations by the Coroner, and has acted as counsel to hospitals and their employees at Coroners Inquests.
