Background

Marc Jolicoeur is the Regional Managing Partner of the Ottawa office of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP. Marc was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1980. He is a graduate of the University of Ottawa Law School (1978) and the University of Ottawa School of Management (1975).

Marc is a member of BLG's National Council and National Management Committee.

Areas of Practice

  • Marc is a corporate/commercial lawyer with a special emphasis on servicing crown corporations, public institutions, charities and not-for-profit organizations.
  • Relevant Professional Experience

  • Acting as general corporate counsel for numerous crown corporations, public institutions, charities and not-for-profit organizations in connection with corporate-commercial matters including governance, corporate matters, strategic alliances, restructuring, financing, public-private partnerships, general contract review, etc.

Representative Mandates

  • Acted for a municipality in connection with negotiation of a multi-year agreement for the collection and composting of organic waste;
  • Acted for a municipality in connection with a waste to energy project;
  • Acted for several public institutions in connection with major capital development projects;
  • Acted for a municipality in connection with a public private partnership for the construction of a light rail transit service;
  • Acted for the court appointed monitor in the sale of the Ottawa Senators NHL franchise;
  • Acted for a public hospital in connection with a multi-year agreement with a crown corporation for the provision of infrastructure facilities and health services to members of the Canadian Forces;
  • Acted in connection with several regional corporations providing public hospitals in the Champlain regions, such as laboratory services, supply chain management, food services, linen services and shared services;
  • Acted for several national not-for-profit organizations in respect of the governance review of their structure, by-laws and board governance.

Speaking/Teaching Engagements

Past and present teaching involvement includes senior instructor and seminar instructor in the Ottawa program of the Bar Admission Course of the Law Society of Upper Canada for over ten years; speaker at numerous conferences and continuing education programs on corporate and commercial law topics.

Past and Current Professional and Community Activities

Marc has a strong belief in business and community participation and during his professional career has been actively involved with over 20 institutions as members of their boards, steering committees, as well as in various other roles. He has been active in organizations such as the University of Ottawa (Chair), the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, the Heroes Fighting Hunger Fundraising Campaign for the Ottawa Food Bank, the Ottawa Civic Hospital Foundation (former Chair), the United Way Canada (former Chair) and United Way of Ottawa (former Chair), the Council of Chairs of Ontario Universities, the Community Foundation of Ottawa, La Cité collégiale , Association des juristes d'expression française de l'Ontario (AJEFO), Festival franco-ontarien, Le Regroupement des gens d'affaires d'Ottawa (RGA).

Awards

Mr. Jolicoeur has received many awards including the Philos Award (2008) and the Trudeau Medal (1999) from the Telfer School of Management of the University of Ottawa for outstanding philanthropic achievement and social commitment, an award recognizing his contribution to the community from Ronald McDonald House (2004), the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal for contribution to the community (2003), the André Mailhot Award – United Way Canada's highest award of merit (2002), the Gordon F. Henderson Award from the County of Carleton Law Association in recognition of business and community involvement (2001), and the Médaille d'excellence for the outstanding businessperson of the year (1994) from le Regroupement des gens d'affaires d'Ottawa.
