Background

Mr. McCrank, former chair of the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board, is Counsel in our Calgary Office. Mr. McCrank received his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1966 from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. In 1969 he graduated with an LL.B. from Queen's University and was admitted to the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1971 and the Law Society of Alberta in 1980. He is also a member of Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta.

Areas of Practice

  • Mr. McCrank brings a wealth of insight into the province's regulatory regime as it relates to large oil sands and electricity projects. He provides strategic advice on some of the most important, large energy projects this province is facing such as northern development and the oil sands, major electricity generation and transmission projects. Mr. McCrank will work across many practice areas but will focus primarily in Oil and Gas, Energy and Litigation.

Professional Experience

  • Mr. McCrank chaired the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board from 1998 until his retirement in March, 2007.
  • Prior to his term at the EUB, Mr McCrank served as the Deputy Justice Minister in the Alberta government from 1989 until 1998.
  • Mr. McCrank was appointed Chairman of a Task Force to review Alberta's Agencies, Boards and Commissions in 2007. (Report completed 2007)
  • In 2007, he was appointed as a Special Representative of the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development to make recommendations to improve the regulatory systems in Northern Canada. (Report completed 2008)
  • In 2008, he led a Task Force to examine the state of Correctional Facilities on behalf of Provincial/Territorial Ministers of Justice. (Report completed 2009)
