Background

Peter Pamel is a partner in our Montréal office and National Leader of our Maritime Law Group. Peter obtained a Bachelor of Civil Law and a Bachelor of Common Law from McGill University in 1987 and was admitted to the Québec Bar in 1988. He also holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Major in Finance) from Concordia University which he obtained in 1983.

Areas of Practice

  • Peter practises almost exclusively in the area of Maritime Law, and regularly represents clients at all levels of our judiciary, including the Supreme Court of Canada and the Federal Court Appeal.
  • Peter is recognized internationally as a leading member of the marine legal community in Canada and is often appointed by P & I and F.D. & D Clubs, as well as H & M underwriters.
  • He acts as counsel to numerous shipowners, operators, charterers, and shipping Lines around the world, and regularly advises in the areas of casualty investigations, charterparty issues and disputes, cargo claim defence, arrest of vessels, regulatory matters, vessel sale and finance, and general commercial activity involving marine property.
  • Peter has also developed an expertise in Arctic Shipping and is very familiar with Northern issues.
  • As National Leader of Team North, he is heading up the firm's Northern Initiative and the development of the firm's marketing efforts in Canada 's north.
  • As Montréal Regional Leader of our Mining Group, he heads up the firm's expansion of the group's activity for mining industry clients with interests in Québec. 
  • He promotes and uses alternative dispute resolution mechanisms including arbitration and mediation.
