Background

Prema Thiele is a partner in our Toronto office. Prema was called to the Ontario Bar in 1992. She is a native of Saskatoon and graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1990, with both a bachelor of laws (with distinction) and bachelor of commerce (with distinction).

• Advised and prepared applications on behalf of several foreign and domestic investment advisers/dealers in respect of carrying on business in Canada and registration under provincial securities legislation.
• Conducted independent audits of and advised securities registrants on designing and assessing governance structures and compliance procedures, and strengthening compliance capability.
• Acted on numerous acquisitions in a variety of areas, including those involving the acquisition of advisers, dealers, insurers (including the first purchase of an insurer by a Canadian chartered bank) and insurance brokers, and those in the hotel, funeral services and automotive industries.
• Provide ongoing legal advice in respect of insurance regulatory and corporate governance issues to several insurers and insurance brokers, as well as to a Canadian chartered bank in respect of its insurance operations, which has included advising on designing and marketing of insurance programs.
