Executive Summary

Sheila Acharya Van Horne is an associate in both our Commercial Real Estate Group and Healthcare Law and Services Group in our Calgary office. Sheila focuses her practice on commercial real estate, leasing, and various aspects of health law (non-litigious).

In the area of real estate, Sheila assists clients with negotiating and drafting documentation relating to acquisitions and dispositions of commercial properties, and has drafted security documentation required in commercial financing transactions including mortgages, security agreements and assignments. She also conducts due diligence in a variety of commercial real estate contexts, including title and off-title reviews, and has acted on behalf of both landlords and tenants in leasing matters.

In the area of healthcare law, Sheila has advised pharmaceutical companies, teaching hospitals, and healthcare institutions on clinical trials, collaborations, licensing, material transfers, and the distribution and sale of pharmaceuticals, medical devices and other health care products and technology. She has provided clinical legal advice to healthcare institutions, including the drafting of policies and procedures for hospitals, and has provided both real estate and regulatory advice to operators of supportive living accommodations.

Representative Work

  • Negotiated Letters of Intent and Purchase and Sale Agreements on behalf of vendors and purchasers.
  • Conducted due diligence on behalf of developers and landowners in the acquisition of industrial and commercial properties.
  • Provided advice on the subdivision approval process and assisted with the successful subdivision of properties within urban and rural centres.
  • Worked with receiver managers and trustees in bankruptcy on corporate, commercial and real estate components of bankruptcy and insolvencies involving large-scale commercial and residential developments.
  • Provided a broad range of legal and policy advice, including advice on clinical trials, public health, capacity, age of consent, and pharmacy-related matters, to the clinical legal teams and front line staff of regional health authorities.
  • Provided advice and drafted material transfer agreements, licensing agreements, consortium agreements, and clinical trial agreements on behalf of medical faculties and research institutions.
  • Assisted multi-national pharmaceutical companies with the release of drugs, medical devices and other related products in Alberta, and guided the launch of specific marketing campaigns on behalf of these organizations in Alberta.
