Articling Program

As an articling student at BLG, you will be exposed to a full range of practice areas. Each office provides a somewhat difference rotation schedule based partly on the particular Law Society requirements in the jurisdiction.

This rotation approach ensures that you work directly with a variety of lawyers and gain a breadth of experience throughout the year. It also encourages articling students who bring particular skills or previous experience to BLG to develop those skills further while at the same time gaining valuable experience in a variety of other practice areas.

The end result is a broad hands-on learning experience that promotes interaction between lawyers, students and clients allowing you to quickly become an integral part of the firm.

BLG Calgary

In Calgary you will have a six -month rotation in each of our Litigation and Business Departments. In the Litigation Department you will be exposed to a wide variety of work including Commercial Litigation, Regulatory, Labour and Employment, Construction and Insurance. In the Business department students will be exposed to a variety of areas including Securities & Capital Markets, Tax, Intellectual Property, Financial Service and Corporate Commercial.

BLG Montreal

In Montreal you will be exposed to a full range of practice areas including nine weeks in Litigation, nine weeks in Business Advisory and the remaining seven weeks in a rotation of your choice.

BLG Ottawa

In Ottawa you will be exposed to a full range of practice areas including up to three rotations in the following areas: Corporate Commercial, Litigation, and Intellectual Property.

BLG Ottawa also offers an intensive Intellectual Property articling program for students with IP-related backgrounds and interests. This program is designed for the candidate who has decided that a career in IP is their main career objective.

BLG Toronto

In Toronto you will be exposed to a full range of practice areas including 11 weeks in Litigation, 11 weeks in Business and the remaining 22 weeks in two rotations of your choice.

Students may also choose an 11-week rotation in the legal department of The Bank of Nova Scotia, the Ontario Securities Commission, the Canadian Securities Transition Office, Coca-Cola Ltd, the Centre for Addiction & Mental Health and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association. There may also be opportunities to spend a portion of your articles in one of BLG's other offices.

BLG Vancouver

In Vancouver you will be exposed to extended rotations in Corporate and Litigation and shorter rotations in Commercial Real Estate and Research.

BLG Waterloo Region

In Waterloo Region you will be exposed to a full range of practice areas including Corporate Commercial, Commercial Real Estate, and Intellectual Property.
