Background
Adam Chamberlain is a partner with our Toronto office. Adam was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1994 and has also been called to the Nunavut Bar. He graduated from the University of Calgary in 1992 where he focused on Natural Resources and Environmental Law.
Prior to attending law school, Adam attended the University of Waterloo where he earned an Honours Bachelor of Environmental Studies. Adam has practised environmental and energy law for most of his career with a focus on the development of infrastructure such as energy, waste, wastewater and water supply facilities.
Areas of Practice
- Adam is the National Leader of the Climate Change Group and the Toronto Regional Leader of the Forestry Law Group.
- Adam's practice encompasses a wide range of matters that are generally related to the environmental regulatory requirements related to the development and bringing on stream of infrastructure.

Climate Change
- Kyoto and Emissions Trading Adam has years of experience with the law relating to the Kyoto Protocol, emissions trading, and the evolving area of environmental and carbon finance.
- Environmental Attributes and Projects Adam has worked on power project developments with Canadian and international companies on domestic and international, renewable and alternative power projects and assisted them in understanding the relationship between environmental attributes (carbon and other emissions) and their specific business objectives.
- Carbon Investment Strategy Adam assists clients actively investing in the carbon economy in Canada and internationally.
Energy
- Adam provides advice to clients ranging from private power developers to the Ontario Power Authority.
- Regulatory Adam was very involved in the development of electricity regulation early in the legislative process following the publication of the White Paper on electricity in Ontario in the 1990s and has acted in this area for several municipal utilities since then.
- Project Development Adam's other work in the electricity sector has ranged from advice to utilities (public and private), to project development and management, to assisting in leading negotiations in large infrastructure projects (this has involved a variety of energy, waste and energy from waste projects). Adam's approach to complex project management issues has proven particularly helpful in situations involving projects involving numerous parties with significantly divergent interests.
- Transmission His work in the electricity sector has included assisting a not-for-profit transmission utility that resulted in the electrification of several off-grid communities in northern Ontario and a private electricity transmission utility in its efforts to construct an international merchant electricity transmission line between Ontario and the United States.
- Government Adam has broad and varied experience acting for government. Adam was counsel to the Ontario Ministry of Finances Advisory Committee on the Management and Disposition of Ontario's Hydro Contracts with Non-Utility Generators. He was also co-counsel to the Select Committee of the Ontario Legislature on Ontario Hydro Nuclear Affairs.
- Market Development Adam assisted in the drafting of several elements of the Ontario Electricity Market Rules prior to their initial introduction. As counsel to a provincial government (outside Ontario ), Adam contributed to the drafting of a proposed Affiliate Relationships Code for that province.

- Environmental Assessment Adam acts as Environmental Assessment counsel on large infrastructure projects in the energy, water and wastewater and waste sectors. His advice ranges from the preparation of the Terms of Reference for EAs to the conduct of hearings and the argument of appeals that arise. Adam's involvement is particularly notable in waste and wastewater sectors environmental assessment.
- Project Management and Strategic Environmental Counsel Adam has provided counsel to numerous significant infrastructure projects. By combining his extensive knowledge of environmental law and policy with sound legal and risk management analysis, Adam brings a unique multidisciplinary approach to problem solving and management.
- Corporate Transactions Adam provides specialized regulatory counsel to parties involved in corporate as well as real estate transactions. He is involved with the analysis and the highly technical environmental requirements that impact many real estate and most corporate transactions.
- Brownfields - Adam provides strategic and legal advice to numerous corporate and public bodies regarding contaminated site management and "Brownfield" redevelopment.
