Background
Mark Lewis is a partner and the regional leader of the Commercial Real Estate Group in our Vancouver office. Mark was admitted to the British Columbia bar in 1997. He is a graduate of the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Laws in 1996. Prior to that, he received a Bachelor of Commerce (Dist.) from McGill University in 1993, with a major in Economics and minors in both Finance and International Business.
Areas of Practice
- Mark practices in the areas of real estate development, commercial lending and commercial real estate leasing, with an emphasis on residential, commercial and resort developments and commercial financing transactions.

Professional Experience
- Leads the BLG Vancouver office's residential and resort development practice and has worked on numerous projects for developers and lenders, including:
- Urban multi-tower mixed-use condominium projects with airspace parcel subdivisions
- Conversion of industrial lands to mixed-use residential and commercial waterfront development project
- 3300 unit golf and marina resort on Vancouver Island, including negotiation of long-term development and servicing agreements between developer and local governments
- 2300 unit Fraser Valley golf and recreational resort, including fractional ownership, time-share, bare land strata and multi-development shared common facility components
- Acquisition of an established 1200 acre Okanagan golf resort and ongoing development work for the purchaser
- Development of a new golf resort in the East Kootenays, including negotiating all development agreements, handling all subdivision matters and managing the establishment of the golf operations
- Acting for resort project lenders, including restructuring advice
- Development of a private ski resort in the East Kootenays
- Strata conversion projects
- Has extensive experience in the following areas:
- structuring co-ownership, joint venture, limited partnership and limited liability partnership relationships for real estate development projects
- representing private capital lenders in connection with mezzanine, equity and profit participation loans
- representing conduit lenders and both institutional and private construction lenders
- representing both landlords and tenants in commercial, retail and industrial leasing transactions
- investigation, acquisition and transfer of government land tenures
- sale and leaseback transactions involving industrial properties, including those with substantial environmental concerns
- Represents Canada 's largest seniors housing owner/operator in connection with its acquisition and financing transactions.
- Represents various clients, including a major national grocer, in connection with acquisition and development matters, including reciprocal agreements related to development, access, use and cost-sharing with adjoining owners.
- Created and implemented British Columbia 's first deposit insurance program for Canada 's largest provider of home warranty and deposit insurance products.
- Has advised Chartered Banks and other lenders on revisions to their standard mortgage terms to address "plain language" and legislative update issues.
- Represents forestry, mining, railway and other clients with industrial land portfolios in connection with acquisition of new properties, subdivision of existing lands and disposition of portfolio and individual assets.
