Background
Karen is a partner in our Calgary office. Karen graduated from the University of Calgary with a B.A. in 1992 and an LLB in 1994. She was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1995 after clerking with the Alberta Court of Appeal and the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench and completing her articles with Howard, Mackie (now Borden Ladner Gervais LLP).
Karen is the Calgary Regional Leader of the National Class Action Group.
Areas of Practice
- Karen practices in the area of commercial litigation with an emphasis on the energy industry, including oil and gas and electricity litigation and regulatory matters, banking litigation including fraud, and class action proceedings.
Professional Experience
- Karen has appeared at the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench, the Alberta Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada.
- Representative matters include the following:
- advising energy companies in litigation relating to oil and gas operations, contracts, acquisitions and divestitures;
- acting for energy clients on regulatory matters and in relation to property and title disputes;
- acted as co-counsel in numerous split-title oil and gas cases in relation to ownership of evolved natural gas;
- acting as class action defence counsel for major financial institution in relation to fraudulent investment scheme;
- representing banks and other financial institutions in relation to fraud matters;
- advising clients in relation to corporate takeovers, shareholder disputes, corporate oppression claims and securities litigation matters;
- acts for a major manufacturer of breast implants in product liability matters;
