Background
Ruth Spetz is a partner in our Calgary office and member of the Calgary Regional Management Committee. She obtained her law degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1985 and articled with the Saskatchewan Department of Justice. Thereafter, Ruth became a member of the Law Society of Saskatchewan (1986), Ontario (1990) and Alberta (1991). She has completed the CICA In-Depth Tax Course, CBA Tax Law Course and the ICD Directors Education Program.

- Advises private clients, trusts, family offices and closely held corporations on tax, trust, estate and charitable planning matters. Recently, Ruth has been involved with:
- advising senior generation family members upon returning to Canada, establishing and varying Canadian trusts, reorganizing Canadian private corporation interests held by family, negotiating next generation shareholder agreement and advising on related business succession and estate planning matters.
- advising and implementing butterfly reorganizations of private corporation investment assets.
- advising private corporations pertaining to Canada Revenue Agency audit of foreign exchange, Part IV tax and inter-provincial income allocation issues.
- advising personal representatives of complex estates involving court sealing of grant of probate, resealing in other Canadian and US jurisdictions, administration of testamentary trusts for US real property, tax implications of the donation of private corporation shares and gifts by Will, and the wind-up and reorganization of private corporation interests.
- preparing tax planned Wills for high net worth individuals involving complex tax, estate and family situations, testamentary trusts and philanthropic planning.
- Advises donors, charities and non-profit organizations regarding tax implications of structuring operations, establishing legal entities, obtaining and maintaining charitable registration, and trust/corporate governance. Recently, Ruth has been involved with:
- establishing and obtaining charitable registration of private foundations for senior executives anticipating a liquidity event and a parallel foundation for a public company.
- advising private foundations undergoing Canada Revenue Agency audit.
- advising on the implications of various gifting and investment strategies and disbursement quota reform.
