Background

Kenneth Tyler is a partner at our Vancouver office. Kenneth was admitted to the Saskatchewan Bar in 1986*, the Manitoba Bar in 1993*, the British Columbia Bar in 1998 and is currently a member of the British Columbia Bar. He is a graduate of the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Laws in 1984.

Prior to that, he attended the University of Alberta, receiving a Master of Arts in History in 1979 and a Bachelor of Arts in 1970.

Professional Experience

  • Experience with cases relating to Aboriginal and Treaty rights, the Division of Powers between the federal and provincial legislatures, and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
  • Defended the position of the Attorneys General of Manitoba and Saskatchewan against challenges to provincial legislation and to the Criminal Code.
  • Participated in several interventions in the Supreme Court of Canada in a variety of constitutional cases.
  • Provided legal and policy advice to the governments of four provinces on constitutional and Aboriginal issues.
  • Assisted in the drafting of legislation relevant to constitutional issues.
  • Provided advice in relation to constitutional reform initiatives.
  • Managed the Constitutional Law Unit of the Department of Justice for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • Served as co-ordinator of Constitutional Relations with the Constitutional Branch for the Saskatchewan Department of Justice.
  • Experience as Constitutional Relations Officer and Crown Attorney with the Constitutional Branch of the Saskatchewan Department of Justice.
  • Experience as President of Tyler, Wright & Daniel Ltd., a small research consulting firm specialising in historical research on native land claims.
  • Experience as an independent contractor with the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs, Canada and Ottawa.
  • Extensive research experience in relation to the history of Western Canada.

Professional and Community Activities

  • Member: 1984 Gale Cup Team.
  • Former Administrative Editor, Manitoba Law Journal.
  • Former Sessional Lecturer and Professor of Graduate Studies for the Faculty of Law of the University of Manitoba.
  • Author of various publications.
  • Responsible for the production of the daily Borden Ladner Gervais Aboriginal Legal Issues e-Newsletter
