Background
Barry Glaspell is a litigation partner at our Toronto office. Barry graduated from the University of Toronto (B. Com. 1981, LL.B. 1984), Harvard Law School (LL.M. 1985) and Trinity College, University of Cambridge (LL.M. Int. Law 1986). He clerked with Justice W. Z. ('Bud') Estey of the Supreme Court of Canada. Barry has been with the firm since 1991.
Professional Experience
Barry is one of Canada's most experienced class action lawyers. Since being involved in the first Canadian multi-provincial class action (the breast implant litigation and settlement) two decades ago, Barry has been counsel on more than fifty class actions involving pharmaceutical, banking, health care, privacy, environmental, pension and insurance claims. He provides expert opinions on class action jurisdictional issues in Canada and the United States of America. Barry also acts as settlement counsel in class actions and is regularly asked to speak at national and regional class actions conferences.
Barry's class action experience in the past 12 months includes as counsel to:
- Provincial lottery corporations regarding gambling addiction claims;
- Pharmaceutical corporations responding to duty to warn and personal injury claims;
- Electronic manufacturer re allegedly defective product;
- Automotive corporation re data loss privacy issue; and
- Hospitals re pathology testing and infectious disease outbreak cases.
Barry teaches the private international law course at the University of Toronto law school.
