Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG), a leading, innovative and client-focused law firm in Canada, is seeking a Specialist, Proposal Writer (Bilingual).

Purpose of the Role

The Specialist, Proposal Writer is a member of a highly visible team responsible for developing proposals and assisting other business development documents and initiatives that address significant and strategic opportunities for BLG.

Utilizing his/her superior writing/editing, project management and interview/consulting skills, the Specialist, Proposal Writer works closely with Partners, Directors, Business Development Practice Group Leaders and other business units to develop winning proposals.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of this role are:

  • Analyze/interpret RFP /client requirements, participate in the development of a clear and focused strategy, and clarify issues as needed
  • Act as proposal team lead on the completion of the proposal / RFP response, ensure RFP process is followed and timelines are defined and communicated
  • Lead the proposal kick-off meeting and follow up with contributors, as required
  • Review and research information about prospective clients’ needs
  • Write proposal narratives, executive summaries and cover letters, ensuring the BLG brand and messaging is consistent
  • Serve as the master editor of proposals to convert contributors’ content into a cohesive document with a clear, single voice
  • Manage production and delivery throughout the proposal process, interact with other business groups as required, e.g., Graphics, Copy Centre, Mail Room
  • Participate in pitch meeting strategy and coaching
  • Lead pitch development, including strategy, content and presentation of materials
  • Participate in pricing discussions include alternative fee arrangements and provide suggestions along with precedents and templates
  • Participate in other BLG business development initiatives such as client teams
  • Assist in maintaining proposal content database and completed proposals; ensure proposal materials are properly sourced and maintained
  • Serve as a writing editor, mentor and coach to others in the Business Development Department
  • Liaise with multiple individuals internally, including lawyers and service departments
  • Participate/lead various Proposal Department projects to improve process and efficiencies

Key Competencies

  • Degree in Business, Marketing, Communications, Writing, Journalism or English / French
  • 3-5 years’ experience as a proposal writer in a professional services firm/legal environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a matrixed-managed environment
  • Superior English / French writing skills: ability to communicate clearly, persuasively and effectively in the current business environment (no marketing-speak/jargon); French written skills an asset
  • Exceptional research, editing and proofreading skills are essential
  • Superior proficiency in MSOffice computer software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); capability in InDesign an asset
  • Business acumen: basic marketing/BD/selling/communication/planning skills, strategic thinker
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills: demonstrated ability to interact and collaborate with others in order to collect information needed for proposals and other BD documents
  • Consulting: emotional intelligence, change agency and coaching skills
  • Experience and demonstrated performance in the leadership and management of personnel
  • Self-starter with excellent project management skills: ability to prioritize tasks and track projects in a fast paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and to collaborate successfully in a team environment
  • Team-ship: supportive BD team member, collaborator, mentor and/or protégé as appropriate
  • Stakeholder of the Firm: sincerely committed to helping the Firm succeed, demonstrated with a positive attitude
  • Flexible: as position, workload and expectations shift
  • Availability to work overtime

At BLG only those BLG members who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with a vaccine approved by Health Canada will be permitted to attend a BLG office or event. “Fully vaccinated” means having received the full series (usually 2 doses) of a vaccine approved by Health Canada, with more than 14 days having passed since the second dose was administered. “Attending a BLG office” includes attending social or business gatherings organized by the Firm, with limits on the number of attendees in accordance with public health guidelines.
