Purpose of the Role

You will be a key member of the Environmental, Municipal, Expropriation and Regulatory (“EMER”) legal team working closely with lawyers and legal support staff to provide the highest level of service to our clients on cutting edge expropriation files, while having the opportunity to cultivate your skills as part of a dynamic and successful national team.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of this role are:

  • You will actively participate as a contributing member of the legal team on a wide range of leading expropriation matters and provide excellent client service
  • You will assist with title and rent roll researching to identify stakeholders in the expropriation process
  • You will review surveys, draft reference plans, draft expropriation plans and various forms of legal descriptions
  • You will prepare expropriation notices, by-laws and offers of compensation
  • You will prepare client reports and engage in direct client communications relating to ongoing expropriation matters as part of a larger team

Key Competencies

  • 5+ years’ experience in a similar role with a focus on title issues and real estate closings; experience with municipal and/or expropriation processes is a significant asset
  • Knowledge and understanding of applicable legislation, including the Planning Act and Expropriations Act, and litigation procedures, including the Rules of Civil Procedure and Ontario Land Tribunal Rules of Practice and Procedure, is helpful but not essential
  • College Law Clerk Diploma or Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario Certificate
  • University degree is an asset
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent ability to take direction and work independently
  • Highly organized and keen attention to detail
  • Strong time management skills and ability to take initiative
  • Knowledge of TeraView is a requirement
  • Knowledge of iManage, Kofax PDF, Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
  • A team player with a strong work ethic and commitment to excellence
