Robert offers clients a sophisticated level of expertise in his commercial real estate transactional and lending practice. He has extensive experience in all aspects of commercial real estate transactions, including:

Robert is a leading practitioner of defeasance transactions and regularly represents mortgage servicers and sub-servicers.
Prior to joining BLG, Robert was a partner at a national law firm. In addition to his diverse private practice experience, he has worked in-house for an international financial institution, and has acted for national and international financial institutions, commercial real estate companies, asset managers and pension funds.

Experience

  • Lead the Canadian Real Estate team for the disposition by K+S Group of its salt business for US$3.2B, including the iconic Windsor Salt mine in Windsor, Ontario.
  • Represented Day & Zimmerman on the acquisition of EMC Power.
  • Acted for an Asian branch of a Canadian financial institution with respect to a term loan facility for CAD $334 million loaned to a sovereign wealth fund for the purpose of acquiring Canadian real property assets.
  • Acted for Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment, a Connecticut-based casino operator, in the acquisition of Casino Niagara and Fallsview Casino from Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, and related matters.
  • Acted for the developer of solar generation assets on the acquisition, build-out and financing of solar rooftop panels and acted for the developer of wind generation assets on property interest acquisitions and management.
  • Acted for the Servicer on a $600 million defeasance transaction, being the largest single asset defeasance transaction in Canada as part of the largest real estate bond financing in Canada, with extensive experience with similar transactions across Canada.
  • Acted for the developer of a King Street condominium project on a construction financing facility.
  • Acted for an international property casualty insurer in respect of complex arrangements related to rebuilding and remediation of a damaged site.
  • Acted for a Canadian corporation with respect to the acquisition and development of a datacenter, including negotiation of lease closure matters for an existing tenant.
  • Acted on behalf of an acquirer of a core Ottawa hotel and office tower.
  • Acted for a developer on complex title clarification matters related to a core development asset.
  • Acted on behalf of a long-term leaseholder on the financing of their interest in an uptown Toronto landmark property.
  • Acted for a financial institution on the sale of a basket of residential mortgages to an offshore entity.
