As a GST/HST lawyer, Bobby focuses his practice on GST/HST and other commodity taxes such as carbon tax, land transfer tax, and PST across Canada. Bobby also provides tax planning services for privately held companies and their owners.
He regularly provides GST/HST and tax advice to Canadian and foreign clients across various industries on business transactions including:
- new ownership structures
- re-organizations
- mergers, acquisitions, and divestures
As a tax litigator, Bobby has a very active tax litigation and dispute resolution practice where he represents clients in tax disputes with tax authorities such as the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and the Department of Justice (DOJ).
He has appeared as lead counsel before the Tax Court of Canada and Federal Court of Appeal with the vast majority of tax cases favourably settled prior to a formal hearing.
In a previous role at the Ministry of Finance, Bobby was a legislation design specialist and key contributor to several high-profile projects in tax administration, tax policy design and the introduction of the HST in Ontario.
Bobby frequently presents on tax law matters before accounting, financial, and industry organizations as well as providing media outlets such as Tax Notes, Bloomberg, CBC and others on new and emerging developments in Canadian tax law. He is also a noted contributor to several industry publications, and is a featured Canadian tax law expert for LexisNexis’ Legal Practice Advisor where he writes extensively and has developed practical modules on tax law for lawyers involved in corporate and commercial transactions.
Bobby was previously a board member and contributing editor to Sales and Use Tax, a quarterly journal published by Thomson Reuters devoted to Canadian commodity tax developments, including the GST, excise taxes and provincial sales taxes.
