Shelley-Mae Mitchell appointed as Chair of the Partnership Board

Toronto (September 21, 2020) — Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) is pleased to announce the appointment of Shelley-Mae Mitchell as Chair of the Partnership Board, effective September 1, 2020.

BLG’s Partnership Board provides overall direction, oversight and governance for the firm. The board is made up of elected regional representatives of partners from each of the firm’s offices located in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver.

Shelley-Mae is a leading partner in our Vancouver office recognized by Chambers Canada and advises clients on all aspects of labour and employment law. She has experience in a wide range of issues related to labour and employment matters, including all types of employment disputes, preventive advice, and human rights complaints. She also has extensive experience in collective bargaining, grievance and labour arbitrations, and Labour Board cases such as strikes and unfair labour complaints. Shelley-Mae has been a member of the Partnership Board since 2016 and, while contributing to the firm in her new leadership role, will also continue with her labour and employment practice.

Shelley-Mae is also active in her community and in 2019 completed almost 20 years as a Board Member and Chair of the Human Resources and Executive Compensation Committee for Ocean Wise and the Vancouver Aquarium. She also recently completed 20 years as a Board Member, Head of HR Committee, and Coach for the North Shore Girls Soccer Club.

Shelley-Mae will be succeeding Alex De Zordo, who will continue his practice within the Commercial Litigation Group in the Montreal office.

BLG's National Managing Partner and CEO, John Murphy, said “On behalf of all members of the firm, I wish to congratulate Shelley-Mae on her new role and thank Alex for his six years of service on the Partnership Board, three of which were as Chair. His leadership and governance contributions over the past years have been invaluable. Shelley-Mae is the second woman in five years to be appointed as Chair of the Partnership Board. At BLG we continue to strive to achieve diversity at all levels of the firm.”

“As incoming Chair, I am very excited to take on this new role. I look forward to working with our stellar Board leadership team and partners to guide the firm through this period of accelerated change,” said Shelley-Mae Mitchell. “Our goal is to position BLG for the future in order to best serve our clients in Canada and abroad.”

With this new appointment, the BLG team will continue to build its strong market position by delivering exceptional client service and providing high-value legal advice.
