Toronto (September 21, 2021) - Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) won Deal of the Year Awards for M&A and Project Finance at the IFLR1000 Canada and United States Awards 2021 after impressing judges with its work on two of Canada’s record-setting deals.
BLG won for:
- Canada M&A Deal of the Year: Starlight Group Property Holdings and KingSett Capital’s $4.8 billion acquisition of Northview Apartment REIT.
- Canada Project Finance Deal of the Year: $260 million financing for Bayers Lake Community Outpatient Centre.
The IFLR1000 awards recognize 2020’s most innovative and impactful legal work. Winners are chosen through conducting in-depth research, peer review and gathering client feedback. These awards honour the best performing law firms and lawyers and pay tribute to the most impressive domestic deals of the year.
“We were impressed by BLG’s leading role representing Northview Apartment REIT in its acquisition by Starlight Group and KingSett Capital,” says IFLR1000 Senior Researcher Chynna Lewis. “It was both the second-largest acquisition of a Canadian real estate business in the public market and the largest-ever Canadian multi-residential transaction.”
BLG also had a leading role in advising the Government of Nova Scotia on the Bayers Lake Community Outpatient Centre financing. This was Nova Scotia’s first healthcare P3 project, as well as the first P3 project where committed financing bids were submitted during COVID-19. Demand for healthcare skyrocketed, while stakeholders had to overcome hurdles created by the country-wide lockdown.
