Are Insurance Companies Ready For Autonomous Vehicles?

With the recent announcement in Ontario to allow autonomous vehicles on the road for testing, automotive manufacturers, insurance companies and others may face questions of liability — a lot earlier than anticipated.  

In  the article "Unknown Roads Ahead" (published in the November issue of Canadian Underwriter), Robert Love, a partner in BLG's Insurance and Tort Liability practice and leader of the Automotive Focus Group provides insights into the impact of autonomous vehicles on the insurance industry and the challenges it may face.

"Consensus seems to be that automated vehicles will reduce collision numbers and severity — and with this, a shift in the determination of liability — thereby impacting underwriting, policies, coverage and the law.
