Laura provides litigation defence services to Canadian and foreign insurers doing business in Canada. Her practice focuses on complex tort litigation, including the defence of catastrophic claims for institutional clients. Laura also advises clients in high-profile multimillion-dollar insurance coverage claims including institutional sexual abuse claims. She provides insurance coverage opinions and advises on policy interpretation under many forms of policies, including:

  • General liability
  • Property claims
  • Cyber claims
  • Professional liability (including monitoring of coverage and defence issues involving actions under such policies).

Laura has specialized experience in public authority and product liability litigation. She advises clients in complex product liability claims for a wide range of industries, including automotive, construction and consumer products.

Laura has appeared before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Court of Appeal and the Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench. She had trial experience in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and has appeared before administrative tribunals.

Laura also leads one of the firm’s pro-bono initiatives which involves assisting clients with consumer claims.

Experience

  • Acting as litigation counsel for automobile manufacturers in claims alleging product defects.
  • Representing manufacturers in fire loss claims related alleged product defects.
  • Acting as counsel in the defence of professional negligence and breach of contract claims against engineers and other professionals.
  • Acting as coverage counsel in claims arising from professional negligence and breach of contract claims.
  • Defending public institutions, including municipalities, in a broad range of tort claims including design and maintenance of roadways/sidewalks, design and operation of storm water and sewage systems, occupiers' liability, transportation services, emergency services and general personal injury claims.
  • Advising insurers and defending insureds in property and casualty and automobile claims, including claims involving commercial host liability.
