Matthew has practised in the areas of civil litigation and white collar crime for more than 25 years. He maintains a national practice with an emphasis on complex commercial litigation, securities litigation, class actions and white collar crime.

Matthew acts as lead counsel for large corporations at all levels of court and in front of industry tribunals, including the Law Society of Alberta, the Mutual Fund Dealers Association, Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC), the Alberta Securities Commission, and the Real Estate Council of Alberta.

Matthew's legal experience involves significant arbitral proceedings, including those in the electricity and real estate development industries, as well as general corporate/commercial matters ranging from employment matters, contractual disputes to litigation involving shareholders rights.

Having been recognized as a leading litigator in virtually every industry publication, Matthew is engaged on mandates across the country involving clients ranging from individuals to large corporations.

Experience

  • Acted as counsel on one of the largest market manipulation matters in Canada.
  • Acted as counsel to a Calgary businessman charged with insider trading, which resulted in an acquittal.
  • Acted as counsel on arbitral matters involving Power Purchase Arrangements where millions of dollars were at issue.
  • Successfully represented a client during arbitration on a matter involving rights under a Land Purchase Agreement worth over $25 million.
  • Advises in-house counsel in matters arising from insider trading allegations.
  • Successfully defended a client in class action proceedings involving real estate development in which claims over $50 million were made.
  • Successfully defended a class action proceeding involving a large developer for claims in excess of $25 million
  • Defending a class action proceeding involving employment claims in excess of $80 million
  • Advises both Exempt Market Dealers and IIROC member firms on matters of compliance, and provides counsel on regulatory investigations and civil litigation.
