Laura’s practice focuses on municipal, expropriation and land-use planning issues, and related litigation.

Laura has appeared before the Superior Courts of Ontario and Québec, and the Ontario Court of Appeal, representing clients in matters ranging from real estate and development disputes, contract disputes, and defending allegations of tortious conduct.  She appears frequently at the Ontario Land Tribunal (formerly, the Local Planning Appeal Tribunal) in planning and expropriation cases on behalf of municipalities and private landowners.

Experience

  • Counsel to City of Ottawa in expropriation hearings and mediations before the Ontario Land Tribunal.
  • Counsel to the City of Ottawa in a breach of contract claim involving ClubLink Corporation ULC, Ottawa (City), v. ClubLink Corporation ULC, 2023 ONSC 5004.
  • Counsel to the Corporation of the City of Cornwall in an application in respect of violations of the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997 including obtaining a mandatory order to vacate and close the building in question.
  • Representing numerous municipalities in civil litigation matters involving real estate and development disputes, contract disputes, and defending allegations of tortious conduct.
  • Counsel to municipalities and landowners before the Ontario Land Tribunal in land-use planning disputes, including contested consent applications, zoning bylaw amendments and minor variance applications.
  • Counsel to Counsel to Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. in the trial of three actions, including a class action, in respect of the 2013 train derailment in Lac-Mégantic. (Ouellet c. Compagnie de chemin de fer Canadien Pacifique, 2022 QCCS 4643).
  • Counsel to The Ottawa Hospital in a contractual dispute pertaining to a historical lease and issues of access, revenue and an implied easement (The Riverside Professional Centre Inc. v. The Ottawa Hospital, 2021 ONSC 1705, 2021 ONSC 3606).
  • Appeared as Commission Counsel to the Long-Term Care Homes Public Inquiry, leading evidence in the public hearings relating to the College of Nurses of Ontario and the Office of the Chief Coroner (2018).
  • Counsel for individual and corporate clients on motions for contempt orders and subsequent appellate proceedings (2016).
