Cory has extensive experience in a variety of areas, including commercial litigation, insurance and tort litigation, estate litigation, professional negligence, product liability, class actions, construction, and oil and gas disputes. Cory is a seasoned lawyer with more than 17 years of experience providing advice and representing local, national and international clients on a wide range of legal disputes, both inside and outside of the courtroom.
Cory’s estate litigation practice encompasses disputes involving wills and their interpretation, passing of accounts, removals of trustees, powers of attorney, beneficiaries rights, and inter vivos gifts. He also has experience in insurance defence, including advising and representing parties on various lawsuits involving claims of serious personal injury, professional negligence, product liability, wrongful termination, oil and gas litigation, construction losses, class actions and property losses.
Cory has extensive trial and courtroom experience, having appeared at all levels of court including the provincial court, Court of Queen’s Bench, and the Court of Appeal, in both New Brunswick and Alberta. He has also successfully opposed leave applications to the Supreme Court of Canada through written argument. Cory’s experience in resolving dispute on behalf of his clients, has led to extensive and invaluable experience in conducting hundreds of discoveries, arguing contested applications, running month long trials with numerous experts involved, and resolving numerous claims through alternative dispute resolution processes, whether mediation or through the Judicial Dispute Resolution process. Cory’s most recent trial experience was in 2018 and 2020, where he was the lead counsel on two 4 week trials (as well successfully opposing a resulting appeal to the Court of Appeal), involving claims of serious injury and allegations of ongoing chronic pain. In both cases, Cory and his team successfully defended BLG’s clients’ interests in obtaining judgments of far less than demanded by the Plaintiffs and their counsel. Trial experience aside, inherent in Cory’s practice is a practical and reasonable approach to a fair, efficient and cost effective handling of legal claims, in achieving excellent results for his clients.
