Sumaya is an Articling Student at BLG’s Ottawa office. She was a Summer Student with the firm in 2021.

Sumaya completed a dual degree in Political Science and Juris Doctor at the University of Ottawa. As a law student, Sumaya was the Vice President of Academic Affairs for the Black Law Student’s Association and a Pro Bono Student Volunteer. Throughout her studies, Sumaya worked as a Research Coordinator for the Refugee Hub at the University of Ottawa, was a Research Assistant for various professors in the Faculty, and was the Coordinator of the Political Science and Juris Doctor Mentorship Program.

Sumaya has also interned for a Family Law firm in Ottawa and for a Member of Parliament. In 2019, alongside other students, she founded Ally Squared, a youth-led non-profit that advocates for an equitable and just society for all identities. She currently sits on its Board of Directors.

Sumaya chose BLG for its friendly culture and the wealth of professional, legal, and mentoring opportunities it offers to its Students and Associates. Since her first year of law, Sumaya has had positive interactions with members and students of the firm. These first-hand interactions, as well as her experience during the recruitment process, confirmed that BLG has the tools and support necessary to develop skilled Lawyers while also encouraging a collaborative and collegial atmosphere

In her spare time, Sumaya enjoys exploring new restaurants in Ottawa, spending time with her family and friends, and mastering her amateur DJ skills.
