B.C.’s natural resources sector: Drivers, trends and strategy

B.C.’s natural resources sector continues to be a key driver for the province's exports and its overall economy - particularly in mining. The COVID-19 pandemic has been an accelerator for the sector, driving resource prices upwards but also creating price volatility in some areas. M&A volumes and company valuations are up (though not across the board) and the transition to a low carbon economy has driven demand to battery minerals such as cobalt, graphite, lithium, and nickel. While these trends set a positive backdrop for the sector in 2022 and beyond, potential headwinds are emerging.

Looking to the future, there are a number of areas to pay close attention to including the trajectory of the global economy and the impact on resource prices, interest rate projections and what it means for M&A, and what the shift towards a net-zero economy looks like in reality. Success for B.C.'s natural resources sector will rely on a careful balancing act between these factors as well as government policy aligning with the sector’s operational reality and managing complex issues surrounding land rights, regulation and adaptation.

Discussion points will include:

  • An overview of the key drivers and trends in the global resource sector and what they mean for B.C.
  • Opportunities and challenges associated with moving to a net-zero economy.
  • Examining how to navigate a complex regulatory landscape, including looking at regulatory, political and market factors.
  • The M&A landscape in a changing environment
  • Transitioning successfully from theory to practice when integrating ESG
  • An overview of what the above initiatives mean for lawyers advising their organizations

This webinar will be comprised of a 60-minute panel discussion with some of B.C.’s legal leaders in the mining sector and will be followed by a 30-minute fireside chat focusing on how ESG has become a key pillar of organizational strategy.

We hope you will be able to join us for this compelling conversation.
