Liviu Cananau brings expropriation and infrastructure expertise to BLG.
Toronto (September 17, 2018) — Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) is excited to welcome Liviu Cananau to its Environmental, Municipal, Expropriation and Regulatory (EMER) Group. Liviu will be based in BLG’s Toronto office.
“With his extensive knowledge of expropriation and infrastructure, Liviu is a strong addition to our team,” said Cindy Clarke, BLG’s National Group Head, Specialized Litigation. “His background in these areas will allow us to better serve our clients with the specialized advice that they require from us and will complement the group’s leading expropriation practice.”
Liviu brings significant experience in the areas of land acquisition, expropriation, real estate and municipal law, in both the private and public sectors. He has also advised on procurement matters, including rolling stock acquisitions, and has negotiated a wide variety of project implementation agreements.
From 2012-16, Liviu acted as in-house counsel for the Regional Municipality of Waterloo in relation to the Region’s Light Rail Transit Project, responsible for land acquisition and expropriations, including hearings of necessity and Board of Negotiation proceedings. Prior to joining BLG, he maintained a robust practice at a national full-service firm.
He obtained his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Toronto in 2006 and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2007.
BLG's expropriation practice is the largest in the country and has handled leading cases on behalf of both expropriated owners and expropriating authorities. The group’s extensive experience and national leadership in the field enables it to tackle any expropriation-related problems and provide clients with creative solutions and strong strategic advice from its team of leading professionals.
