John Murphy Assumes Role Of BLG National Managing Partner And CEO

Toronto (July 3, 2018)  — The Partnership Board of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) has announced that effective July 1, 2018, John G. Murphy assumed the role of National Managing Partner and Chief Executive Officer.

John has spent his entire legal career at BLG where he has also held significant leadership positions within the firm, including as member of the Partnership Board, the National Management Committee and Managing Partner of the Montréal office for over 11 years. Throughout that time, he has demonstrated success as a dynamic business leader, served as a strategic advisor to some of BLG’s longstanding clients and promoted commitment to the community through his involvement with several boards and organizations.

"After a rigorous and concerted succession planning process, the Partnership Board has selected a strong leader with a proven track record to succeed our longstanding NMP and CEO, Sean Weir," said Alex De Zordo, Chair of BLG’s Partnership Board. "John Murphy is already leading us into the future with vigour, enthusiasm and continued commitment to top talent and gold standard service to maintain our edge in an increasingly competitive legal market."

"My focus continues to be on client service, collaboration and building a forward-looking team across BLG’s five offices. I will continue to drive these priorities in line with our commitment to deliver value to our clients," said John Murphy, BLG’s new National Managing Partner and CEO.

John succeeds Sean Weir who has been in the role for the past 18 years. Sean was instrumental in the merger of five regional firms to form BLG on March 1, 2000 and has successfully led Canada’s largest firm since its inception. In his new role as Vice Chair at BLG, Sean will focus on strategic firm priorities and international initiatives while strengthening client relationships.
