BLG counsel appointed to Québec Superior Court

Mark Phillips named puisne judge of the Superior Court of Québec for the district of Montréal

Montréal (April 14, 2020) – Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) congratulates counsel Mark Phillips on his appointment to the role of puisne judge at the Superior Court of Québec for the district of Montréal.

“Mark’s broad range of litigation experience will serve him well in this new role,” said John Murphy, BLG’s National Managing Partner and CEO. “He has represented clients exceedingly well before the highest courts in Québec and Canada, and will be an excellent addition to the bench in Québec.”

Mark was a member of the Disputes Group at BLG since 2005, and regularly represented clients before the Superior Court of Québec, the Québec Court of Appeal, the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada, in a variety of public and private law matters. He has served as counsel in constitutional challenges under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Québec Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and has acted in several major cases where fundamental freedoms were at stake – notably freedom of conscience and religion, freedom of expression, freedom of association and equality rights.

Mark obtained his degrees in civil and common law from McGill University in 1993 and was called to the Barreau de Québec in 1995. Prior to joining BLG he practised as a litigator at another national law firm as well as a boutique litigation firm in Montréal.
