BLG appointed to advise on U.K. trade negotiations

Toronto (September 7, 2021) — The U.K. government’s Department for International Trade has awarded a contract to Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG), in consortium with U.K. firm TLT LLP and U.S. firm McDemott Will & Emery, to advise on three major trade negotiations as it seeks to shape the country’s post-Brexit trade landscape.

The contract, worth up to £7 million over its lifetime, follows the consortium’s appointment to the U.K. government’s trade law panel in February of this year. It includes providing all legal advice and support to negotiate the U.K.’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), and bilateral free trade agreements with Canada and Mexico.

BLG, TLT and McDermott Will & Emery will lead a network of sub-contractor law firms offering local legal expertise across the CPTPP region.

“We are honoured to have been selected to assist the U.K. government in these important and complex trade negotiations,” said Matthew Kronby, BLG partner and an expert in international trade law, who will lead the project. “We look forward to working with our international partners and the Department for International Trade to help bring these deals to fruition.”
