Former Alberta Justice joins BLG as Senior Counsel

The Honorable Marina S. Paperny is looking forward to sharing her knowledge and gaining a fresh perspective from young lawyers

Calgary (March 25, 2024) – Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) welcomes The Honorable Marina Paperny, K.C. to BLG as Senior Counsel.

After serving for 27 years as a Justice for the Courts of Appeal in Alberta and the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, the Court Martial Appeal Court of Canada and the Court of King's Bench in Alberta, she is excited to get back to her roots, working as Senior Counsel for BLG. During her time as a Justice, Ms. Paperny presided over thousands of hearings and authored numerous written decisions. Over the years, these decisions included numerous appeals in commercial, energy, insolvency and restructuring, constitutional, administrative, family and criminal law, including several high-profile cases.

With her significant legal, judicial and business expertise, Ms. Paperny brings a unique perspective to the BLG Disputes team.

A passionate Calgarian, she started her career as an associate at a Calgary law firm before moving to Howard Mackie (now BLG) in Calgary, in 1982.

Later, Ms. Paperny moved on to a role as President and general counsel of a private investment firm focusing on real estate development and medical imaging.  Through her transition back to private practice, she is looking forward to working alongside lawyers at the various stages of their careers and consulting with BLG teams to deliver exceptional results for clients.

"It is going to be great to work with so many young lawyers and for me to hear new perspectives and learn from them,” said Ms. Paperny, Senior Counsel at BLG. “BLG feels like home for me, and it truly feels like a full-circle moment for me to come back to this firm. I am looking forward to working with so many bright and wonderful legal minds and to bring what I can from my experience to help generate great outcomes.”

In addition to her extensive legal background and serving as a Justice for nearly 30 years, Ms. Paperny is a native Calgarian and committed community member, involved in many local causes and organizations. In addition to her work as a lawyer and Justice, she is also a founding board member of Pro Bono Law Alberta and has served on boards and committees for many organizations, societies and legal associations.

“With her passion for the law and significant contributions to the profession, welcoming Ms. Paperny to BLG is an honour,” stated Alan Ross, K.C., Regional Managing Partner, BLG. “Her years of experience as a lawyer, Justice and mentor brings a unique perspective to BLG and she will be a great asset to the firm and our clients.”
