Curtis is a professional engineer and registered Canadian and U.S. patent agent. With more than 20 years of experience, he provides strategic, business-focused counsel to innovators and their business partners in both official languages.

Within his practice, Curtis provides IP strategy and drafts and prosecutes high-tech and mechanical patents and industrial designs in Canada, the U.S. and internationally for emerging companies and established businesses in a range of industries. Additionally, Curtis advises entrepreneurs, innovators and corporations on global patent strategy and portfolio management.

Curtis is a member of the Innovation Thought Leadership Committee, chair of BLG’s Ottawa Charitable Donations Committee, and a former member of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee (2008-2018).

Prior to joining BLG, he was a senior patent examiner at the Canadian Intellectual Property Office.

Experience

  • Providing IP strategy and opinions regarding patentability, infringement, validity and IP due diligence issues
  • Patent drafting and prosecution in Canada, U.S. and internationally for emerging companies and established clients in various fields of mechanical and electrical engineering
  • As CIPO patent examiner, examined patent applications relating to emerging Internet and wireless technologies, data-switching networks, fiber-optic networks and related protocols, architectures, software and hardware
