Project Description:

Studio Bell is the first facility of its kind in North America – it is a performance hall, recording facility, broadcast studio, live music venue and museum. This iconic building, designed by Allied Works Architecture, is comprised of nine curved and interlocking towers, with terra cotta clad walls to enhance acoustics. The building also incorporates the revitalized King Edward Hotel, one of Calgary’s oldest buildings and legendary blues club.

BLG Role:

BLG has a long history working with the National Music Centre – members of the firm have supported the project both professionally and in a volunteer capacity for almost 20 years.

For the National Music Centre development project, BLG provided advisory services in relation to tax, donors, intellectual property, project agreements and dispute resolution. Some of the unique features of this project which BLG advised on included the renovation of the historical King Edward Hotel, including the abatement of hazardous substances, air rights agreements, temporary encroachments and easements for crane and underpinning works, architectural services agreements, construction contracts, and exhibition fabrication and installation agreements
