As a Summer Law Student, Robert is assisting lawyers on a wide variety of tasks within our Business and Disputes groups.

Robert graduated with distinction from his Bachelor of Commerce degree in Finance from the University of Calgary Haskayne School of Business. His Finance background was a precursor to his work terms at Fidelity Investments Canada and the Alberta Securities Commission (ASC). At Fidelity, Robert facilitated client relationships on multimillion-dollar accounts, prepared financial valuation models, and guided investment strategies. During his time at the ASC, he performed regulatory reporting and oversight reviews in Alberta’s capital and energy markets. Robert applied the Securities Act (Alberta) for the regulation of entities. He oversaw Self-Regulatory Organizations and Derivative/Equity Exchanges, including the Toronto Stock Exchange Venture Exchange (TSXV), and led TSXV equity reporting and ICE NGX energy contract reviews. During these work terms, Robert demonstrated exemplary results in effectively conducting quality research, preparing memorandums, finding innovative solutions for clients, developing financial models, and regularly presenting to stakeholders.

Prior to attending law school, Robert worked at Suncor Energy Services Inc. where he played an instrumental role in successfully transitioning Suncor to the Workday cost reduction project. Robert obtained invaluable experience in managing all of the involuntary severances from Ontario and drafting employment contracts. In addition, he worked collaboratively to achieve significant corporate restructuring for Suncor. Throughout his career, he has gained a diverse range of experience in Alberta’s capital markets, securities regulation, oil & gas, and employment.

During Robert’s first year of law school, he participated in the Law Students’ Legal Advice Clinic, where he conducted client intakes for criminal/civil matters, participated in court appearances, and negotiated with the Crown. Robert’s involvement at law school includes the McGillivray Moot and the Business Law Association.

Participating in the UCalgary Law School Prep Course sponsored by BLG sparked his desire to work for the supportive legal community at the firm. The quality of leadership, collegial work environment, dynamic culture, and focus on career development reinforced Robert’s decision to join the BLG team. Robert’s drawn to BLG, as the Calgary office has the resources and training of a large national firm, together with a cohesive team and a strong local presence. Robert is passionate about corporate law and wants to utilize the unparalleled rotational program for exposure to different practice areas. The position is well aligned with Robert’s personal skill set and professional goals, which is why he is excited to join the incoming summer student class.

Robert enjoys traveling, learning about different cultures, and experiencing new outdoor adventures. In addition, Robert’s passions include film, music, and food.
