Laura Poppel is an experienced general commercial litigator who handles every file with the client’s goals in mind, whether it’s an oil and gas dispute, a regulatory investigation or prosecution, a dispute between shareholders or regarding director or officer duties, or a proposed class action.

Recognized by both Lexpert and Best Lawyers, Laura has successfully represented some of Canada’s biggest financial institutions and energy companies. A seasoned trial lawyer, she has appeared at all levels of Alberta court, in Federal Court and before the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization and the Alberta Utilities Commission. Laura has represented clients in complex hearings with millions of dollars at stake and major regulatory investigations that have the potential for significant financial penalties and reputational harm.

Laura is a frank, efficient and proactive legal advisor who is committed to understanding her client’s business and ensuring they’re informed and comfortable at every stage of the dispute.   • Nova Chemicals Corporation, as co-counsel, in a successful application concerning the Province of Alberta's unlawful collection of C$20 million in royalties relating to gas processed at the Harmattan Gas Processing Plant.
  • PrairieSky Royalty Ltd., in a successful King's Bench trial concerning whether a royalty constituted an interest in unpatented Crown lands.
  • Bank of Montreal, in a successful Provincial Court trial concerning the bank’s regulatory obligations upon termination of an employee. 
  • A privately held renewable power corporation in the successful dismissal of an appeal concerning the proper jurisdiction for litigation regarding a project located in California. 
  • An Alberta realtor and her brokerage in successfully defending an appeal of a trial decision concerning a residential property claim.
  • IntelliView Technologies Inc. in successful applications to declare an individual a vexatious litigant at both the Court of Queen's Bench and the Federal Court of Canada.
  • Bank of Nova Scotia in a successful application for summary dismissal of three potential class actions.
  • Market Surveillance Administrator, as intervener, in successfully dismissing an application for judicial review given there were related and ongoing proceedings about the issue already before the Alberta Utilities Commission.
